The Breakfast

Willa ran smack into Jake in the hallway and almost knocked over three pounds of link sausage at the same time.

"Whoa!" he said, struggling to regain his hold on the hot chafing dish. "Where’s the fire?"

"In there," she said, voice trembling. "Steve and Danica are in there, snogging it up. And when he saw me, he wasn’t even embarrassed. He called me babe."

"Ugh. Unforgivable," said Jake, and he was dead serious. "Did they seem surprised to see you?"

"She did—he didn’t."

"Interesting. How about McNulty—was he surprised?"

"I didn’t stick around long enough to observe," she said, shamefaced.

"No worries. Mina was almost certainly watching him. We can get her first impressions a little later. Oof, this sausage is getting heavy. Ready to go back in?"

Willa tried to lift her feet and found she was glued to Jenny and Matt’s gorgeous restored oak flooring.

"No," she wailed. "I can’t face it, Jake. I can’t face a potential killer and my ex-boyfriend making out with my biggest competitor. It’s too much."

"You can," he said, seriously. "Because you’ve got to."

"Why?"

A surge of rebellion swelled in Willa's chest, as the indignity of it all began to hit her. To be sneered at and patronized by an ex as toxic as Steve—in front of her family and friends—was unbearable. It's a violation of the Geneva Convention, she told herself, getting hot in the face. Everything about it was cruel and unusual.

No one had the right to force her back in there. Not Jake, not Mina, not even Sheriff Poole. Nope, nope, nope.

"Why? Because a man is dead, Willa," Jake said. "It's literally my job to find out who killed him."

"It's not my job, though. This is none of my business."

She glared at Jake, and he gazed back at her.

"It may not be your job, but it sure as heck is your business. Duane may have put it all on the line for you. It’s time to return the favor. You can do this, Willa. Into the lion’s den we go."

Kyle pushed his long nose against the breakfast room's swinging door and trotted out in search of Willa. He jumped against her insistently, throwing her off balance, but removing that stuck, frozen feeling from her limbs. She reached down automatically to flip his ears back, and he licked her hand. Courage flowed directly from Kyle and into Willa's heart.

"We’ll bring a lion of our own," said Jake, giving her a crooked smile. "Come on Kyle. Let's get 'em."
